Notes for Vest

• The yarn is a dense wool. I started with 2 ounces of each of the six brights and 12 ounces of the black. There is enough left over to make another small project (hat, socks, etc.)

  My GUESSTIMATE is that you could substitute a 50 gram ball for each 2 ounce skein and have enough to complete the project. Remember, that is not absolute and will depend on what type of yarn, what gauge and whatever sizing changes you make.

• The blocks are 7 stitches by 15 rows and were knitted on size 9/US (5.5 mm) needles.

• Pickup for the 1x1 ribbing bands is constant at 7 stitches for each block with the bottom, neckline and front bands knitted on size 9/US needles. ("Eyeball" to determine the necessary number of rounds.)

  The armhole bands are done a little differently. The stitches are picked up at the rate of 7 per block and the first row is knitted in STOCKINETTE on size 8/US (5 mm) needles. The rest of the armhole bands are knitted in 1 x 1 ribbing: 2 rows on size 8/US, 2 rows on size 7/US (4.5 mm), 2 rows on size 6/US (4.25 mm) and 2 rows on size 5/US (3.75 mm.)

• The buttonholes are (more or less) from instructions published in More Than 100 Ways to Knit Better by Lois Larkin published in 1967. Interweave Knits (magazine) has been featuring the same buttonhole instructions in their recent "How To" sections.

• Entrelac, usually, is not particularly slimming, but as with this vest, it can be cheerful, fun and warm. This project is my version of "shall wear purple." If you haven't gotten to that point yet, try one for the kids!
